MOPP team at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Annual Conference 2023

On Friday 10 November 2023, members of our Medicines Optimisation and Pharmacy Procurement (MOPP) team attended the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Annual Conference 2023.

The event, which was held in London, focused on the theme: ‘Working Together: Empowering the Workforce to Transform Patient Care’ and was an opportunity to hear from keynote speakers on a range of key topics across the pharmacy landscape and to take part in interactive workshops.

As part of the day, the team also presented a number of posters in collaboration with colleagues on the below topics:

  • Exploring treatment burden of Oral Nutritional Supplements (ONS) and impact on antibiotics using a data linkage approach - Rebecca Fisher, AHP Prescribing and Procurement Lead, NHS London Procurement Partnership and Denise Rosembert, Assistant Director for Medicines Optimisation (MOPP), NHS London Procurement Partnership
  • An innovative method to identify educational need regarding depression and anxiety as an under-recognised side effect of anti-TNF medicines - Denise Rosembert, Assistant Director for Medicines Optimisation (MOPP), NHS London Procurement Partnership, Anja St Clair Jones, Consultant Pharmacist for Gastroenterology, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, Dr Tim Raine, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Dr Fiona Eldridge, Clinical Psychologist Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Evaluation of clinical pharmacy activities associated with patients receiving homecare medicines in a group of UK teaching hospitals - Alison Eggleton, Senior Pharmacist, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Rachel Berry, Associate Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Pharmacy Services, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Denise Rosembert, Assistant Director for Medicines Optimisation (MOPP), NHS London Procurement Partnership, Amanda Plummer, Deputy Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Caroline Cheng, Deputy Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services, Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • What’s age got to do with it? A service evaluation of the Discharge Medicines Service for paediatric patients - Ashifa Trivedi, Chief Pharmaceutical Officer’s Clinical Fellow, NHS London Procurement Partnership, Afaq Bhatti, Monica Patel, Bhavisha Patel – Rotational pharmacists at The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Denise Rosembert, who attended the day along with colleagues Rebecca Fisher and Ashifa Trivedi, said: “The work carried out to produce the posters for the conference has enabled us to share innovative ideas drawing attention to the prescribing of biologics and biosimilar medicines, oral nutritional supplements and antibiotics, clinical pharmacy homecare services and the Discharge Medicines Service (DMS) for paediatric patients. We can then share results and best practice with our members and wider NHS community - highlighting issues to improve patient safety, pathways and clinical interventions.”

“This was my first time attending the RPS conference as a consultant credentialed pharmacist. I was wowed by Professor John Amaechi’s speech, which offered an eye-opening opportunity to reflect on the meaning of leadership, and some inspirational take home messages including the challenge ‘not to sit on the fence’. Networking with colleagues new and old allowed fostering of relationships which is key for any future work.”
